When it comes to coffee, it is a plant whose properties were discovered about 3,000 years ago. Initially, however, people did not know how to eat its fruits. It was only in the fifteenth century that the seeds began to be roasted and then made into an infusion.

Yerba mate differs from coffee in many respects in that it is made from dried and crushed leaves of the holly plant, which grows in four South American countries, i.e. Paraguay, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. The first discoverers of yerba mate, or rather paraguayan holly, were Indians who initially chewed fresh leaves of the plant. It has been noticed that it adds energy and increases concentration, while eliminating the feeling of hunger. Only later did they begin to prepare the essence from dried leaves, which we still know as yerba mate. As we can see, both infusions have one common denominator, and that is stimulation. But which one to choose?

Yerba or coffee?

As we wrote, the common denominator for both infusions is stimulation, but in both cases it works completely differently. After coffee, we wake up almost immediately, but when the caffeine drops, we completely lose energy and our well-being worsens. After drinking coffee, the effect of stimulants in the average person’s body lasts for about 3-4 hours. Unfortunately, after this time, the value of the substance decreases dramatically, so the only “rescue” is usually another coffee.

As we all know, preparing coffee is very simple. Coffee can be found in many forms, and the preparation method ends with brewing water and adding your favorite additives. In the case of yerba mate, the matter is a bit more complicated, because for its preparation you need to prepare water without exceeding a specific temperature, and the process of brewing yerba mate itself is quite unusual, but it is practiced by many and even called a ritual.

How to brew yerba mate.

First, pour the appropriate amount of dried herb into the gourd; it is recommended to start with a slightly smaller amount to get a feel for the taste. Then cover the opening of the container with your hand and shake it several times so that the lighter particles are on your hand. The herb should be shaped into the so-called mound, i.e. arrange the herbs diagonally at an angle of 45°, so that on one side it reaches the very top of the vessel and on the other side it exposes its bottom. Pour a small amount of water, about 30-50 ml, into the free space so that the dryers absorb all of it. Then we place the bombilla under the dried material so that it remains stable. The last step is to pour the herb with water at a temperature of about 70-80 degrees Celsius. Water should be poured slowly and not too suddenly. It is worth remembering that once you put the straw under the wet herb, you should not take it out! This is recommended because the herb will separate during mixing and may clog the bombilla, which will not help you enjoy the taste of yerba mate.
